refurbishing my ol’ dell m1210

without comments

just recently i started kind of a refreshing-program for my trusty 12.1″ dell laptop i got 4 years ago yet. it’s been one of the first core2duos and in the meantime got 4gb ram in it – which still make it surprisingly useable, even for my photo-stuff (well, bibble adds it’s magic there either). it’s running ubuntu for a while yet, currently 10.04/64bit.

first it finally became time to replace the battery, so i picked one of those cheapo hong-kong-clones which – till now at least – prove to be a good choice.. besides the good capacity it also fits way better than the original one did which was wobbling around in it’s slot..

today i got an ericsson F3507g 3g-modem (off ebay as well, but used) to fill the free slot in the bottom. surprisingly it was no problem at all to install in ubuntu, it was recognized at once, let me pick my provider from the presets to adjust the connection-settings – and as soon as i sled the SIM in (the right way) it even connected..

next is a harddrive-caddy which is on it’s way yet to take the current “classic” hd which i’ll replace with an ssd asap – this definitly should give that box at least another 4 years of sufficent performance, if nothing else breaks before..
