24 hours on skis

the last weekend i’ve been to the Kronplatz ski resort in italy – as usual – not for holidays.. the local skiing schools had prepared for an extraordinary event – trying to challenge some world records, namely “the most vertical feet skied downhill in 24 hours” – for single athletes and a team of four.

starting with four teams of four (only one per team was allowed on the piste at any time) their modest goal was to make 1 million metres in height altogether – and they did so.. in only about 14 hours.

all athletes have been very well prepared, and everything around quite obviously was at least as well organized with a lot of helpers around all the time. and all the effort was thanked with perfect weather-conditions which probably helped a lot to even make a girl of 20 shatter the old record for a single athlete (which has been ~92k metres, set by a male of course)

with the help of bernd i covered this event for their homepage and PR, which was a lot harder than expected, as getting close to the action wasn’t that easy – as nobody wanted to risk an accident at speeds of 100km/h, and the only turn they had to do at the end of each lap of course got a bit boring soon ;)

despite the lack of time for such experiments i’ve put the gopro on one of the skier’s helmet once, but never having done this with skiing before the setup has been quite a bit too low for the racing action (well, usually there’es a front wheel to get into the frame ;)), but it probably still shows the athletes perspective quite well – keep in mind they did all this ~200 times.. ..

it’s been a pleasure to witness and document the success of such a motivated crowd – and i seriously doubt that their records will be broken anytime soon.

annual “kabarett-woodstock” in neighbouring city of korneuburg. actually went there just for watching russkaja, but somehow felt like picking the camera from my car’s trunk, and since the organizer was fine with it.. ..

good test for the d700 anyways which i haven’t shot concerts with so far – though i’m not too impressed with it’s performance in this extreme situations, heavily tinted light and high isos. not to mention that i heard myself saying “i want my primes back” several times. still quite undecided where to go from my system-mishmash..

couple of days ago i felt the need to get out into the snow, though freezing cold – someone gotta test camera’s batteries anyhow 8) the planned short walk then took over 3 hours, back home past 2 in the morning..

my main goal of course has been our village’s castle, as it’s lights could give nice effects with lower fog, but unfortunately the fog wasn’t that low.. but with snow and all this light-pollution around here one can shoot at night nowadays at speeds nobody ever would have thought of couple of years ago!.. did i mention lately i actually *love* light-pollution? ;)

all done with bibble 5, just some tweaking of colors/whitebalance, no photoshop.

steaming sugar

on my way home from a job the other day i simply couldn’t pass a big sugar refinery where there were just huge piles of steam towering up against the partly cloudy moon-lit sky.. unfortunately the steam was quite a bit less yet when i found my first spot to shoot, but still i thought it would be a nice test-drive for the nikon’s night-abilities which i omitted to test till now..

some shots of a day in the mountains back in july, climbing the peaks above zauchensee/salzburg.

it’s been a great day with ever changing light, and the d700 with 50/1.4 and 12-24/4 prove to be a nice combo for this ~6 hours hike.

this year’s second race of the “schnecke wintercup”-series, taken place in andlersdorf, a village in the flat east of vienna. it’s been a foggy november-morning, so i put up a little darker and less colorful conversions this time..

all done with d700+50/1.4
