annual “kabarett-woodstock” in neighbouring city of korneuburg. actually went there just for watching russkaja, but somehow felt like picking the camera from my car’s trunk, and since the organizer was fine with it.. ..

good test for the d700 anyways which i haven’t shot concerts with so far – though i’m not too impressed with it’s performance in this extreme situations, heavily tinted light and high isos. not to mention that i heard myself saying “i want my primes back” several times. still quite undecided where to go from my system-mishmash..

had those raw-files flying round for a while, simply no time to finish them up.. so each time i looked at them i tried different things, never ever came to a decision which style to finally use, so this gallery is quite atypical for me, mixed up in colors and styles.. but to finally get them online, here they are..

not too much variance in the concerts-category lately, so again it is Side Effect “on stage”, though in this case there was no real stage.. it has just been a mini-gig combined with the presentation of their new video, which you can watch here.. and it was the goodbye of armand, who played his last concert, after 12 years quitting his glamorous and excessive life as a rock’n'roll-star turning towards a boring and oldfashioned family-life.. 8)
(just kidding, but don’t worry armand, nobody is reading this anyways.. ;))

as said, the concert happened “at eye level” in the vienna “kunsthalle”, meaning there was no real stage, as well as there was no real stage-lighting.. so it was mainly dogfight with the 20mm + one wireless flash (silly me left the second at home), but there are also some shots with the 85/1.2 and available light..

and well, of course the photos are a little armand-centric, as most of the last 12 years he was most often the least photographed one of the four i had to change this at least for once.. :)

my friends of side effect rocking the vienna chelsea, quite a small venue, which’s lighting isn’t the most liked among photographers.. so besides playing a little with off-camera-flashes i also decided to shoot this one black&white, tri-x 400 sounds like an appropriate film, doesn’t it? :)

so, me shooting on film again.. you think!.. ;) the real story is that finally there is someone writing plugins for bibble, my favourite raw-converter, and one of those is “andy” by sean puckett. it’s doing black&white and it’s not just a simple desaturation as most programs would do to digital (color-)files but a real simulation of the tonality of black&white films and papers.. so for all old-school photogaphers still speaking darkroom: shot on tri-x, enlarged on fomaspeed normal contrast – all available in the free version of andy, with the pro-version of this plugin one could even choose developer/times, contrast of papers and many other freaky options..

well now that it’s out, they are back, and even played their first gig just around teatime on wednesday the other week, i may also come out with what have been super-secret shots till now.. 8)

some might have seen the one official photo on their site, but of course that wasn’t a single shot and take as those guys are *very* picky and especially touchy if it comes to their noses *g*.. maybe some of those might be used in future, but usually most of them soon will be buried in my archives..

so.. who finds the keeper that made it on their site?

it’s been a while, and since even dave himself can’t remember if they played another gig after their 10th anniversary back in 2004, i’d say it was the first one.

at least the first one i took photos of. this time the arena in vienna prove how much it’s a matter of the light how good pix can get, compared to the last dresden dolls gig there, this time it sucked big time.. many times i found myself (at the edge of the stage) more lit than the guys up there.. no use to even think about shooting clempi (the drummer) as he sat in complete darkness, and also the rest of the light was way more color than light – a photographer’s definition of “bad” 8)

or.. the challenge of doing something different..

yesterday, arena, vienna.. the fabulous dresden dolls.. again. following my pics of krems/donaufestival i got invited to shoot in the arena as well, officially.. which doesn’t necessarily make a difference, but at least one has an armstrap to show if one of the venue’s staff is getting too curious bout a big lens..

“3 songs from the ditch” – ok .. why not.. though i’m usually using the first songs to watch band and light from a little distance, but if i may.. why not. as expected, it was rather useless.. way too close, and obstacles like video-tripods aren’t too helpfull either to get to the proper angle.. and the timelimit of 3 songs is way to tight.. the rest i thought i would shoot from the crowd, but uh-oh.. never seen the arena that full, so plan b was to get up to the gallery and hoping folks up there would let me to the frontrow – which worked out. but that means that most of the time i shot from one and the same position – hence variance has to happen in post-production/presentation, so i decided to try square only crops.. for now.. will put up another gallery with a different selection and crops if time serves..

[update] did i say different crops?.. nah.. let’s do no crops at all, those are as out of camera, just with a little less color ;) to the gallery [/update]

concert in general was a good show as always, though esp. amanda looked quite tired to me yet.. guess touring that long takes it’s toll.. light was good (that’s why the light-guy got his pic of fame either 8)), though krems still was a tad bit better..

also have some shots of the rare instances when thomas truax (who played support) got some light shed on him and/or was on stage, will put them up some time later.. hang on.. [update] here they are [/update]

went there quite motivated, after the great shots i got from the dresden dolls in krems, but didn’t figure light could be *that* bad compared to krems.. and well, half of the bands haven’t been to my taste either.. there seems no lineup up anymore on the festivals’ site so i don’t have much info bout the bands at hand..

wolf eyes. one of the ones being too extreme. real noise. there might be times this is fun, but not that day. we left for chinese dinner after some “tunes” 8) so.. no photos of them.

battles. just in time got back for the last tracks of them.. they seem to be cool. electronic/funky/experimental/beatbox-whatever.. cool mix after all. pics

gang gang dance. not mine again. still i took some pics before leaving for a beer.. but that voice.. and did i mention the bad light?.. thanks for the beer-break ;) pics

architecture in helsinki. the most well known band of the evening, fun to watch 8 or so folks on the stage, ever switching positions and instruments.. i think live they sound very different to their records.. pics

the dresden dolls in krems

it happened to be the 30th birthday of the female half of the dresden dolls – amanda – and it turned out to be an incredible concert. i again (like with chicks on speed the year before) took my camera and a single lens with me (1d”+85/1.2) as i didn’t know what security checks would be like and if one was allowed to shoot – well i should have read the dolls’ page in advance..

however.. pics turned out to be great again (as last year), somehow that stage suits me and this cam/lens-combo well, given the fact everything was shot from audience again they’re pretty amazing.. but of course it’s also the good lighting which makes the main difference.

on the pics one also sees ‘peaches’ – who played on the very same festival the day before, was still there and came on stage twice (not sure how much of a surprise it really was, but they played it quite well) as a birthday-present for amanda.
